Make Money at Home - Blogging For Profit Or Mini Site Part 4
The final step in the process of having a successful and profitable niche blog is the management of your site.
Here I’m talking about management in terms of keeping your site running, monitoring what’s working and what’s not, and monitoring the success of your site so you know how much effort to commit to it on a continual basis.
Here are some of the elements involved in the management area of a successful blog.
1. You need to manage and track your search engine statistics. Here I mean two things. 1. is the doings of your search competition and 2 is the rankings and traffic from various pages of your site.
In 1. You need to be always checking up on your search competition. Just by knowing what sites link to your competitor site can allow you a way to gain new backlinks. You contact the same people and get the same links PLUS keep doing all the good SEO you’re already doing, you can steal their spot.
in 2. You need to monitor your own search rankings to see what search terms are bringing you traffic. At this point you can either choose to focus more of your content on those terms, giving readers coming from those terms more to look at and more opportunities to get pushed to your affiliate link OR you can look harder at the monetization of those pages. This might include testing different affiliate link positionings, changing the text, and more.
Following on from that, something else that needs to be tracked on your blog, is how successful your content is at converting visitors to sales.
This has traditionally been tough on a blogs because the way they are set doesn’t generally allow for any form of split testing. However, a new blogging software called Firepow has made this possible. What you can do is test which content your audience responds best to. You can use variations of two different posts, have them alternate for each new user to the blog, and see which version of the post generated the most affiliate link clicks.
Optimizing your content like this may be the easiest way to increase your bottom line. After all think about this: If you want to double your profits from a site, you can either double your site traffic, or you can double your conversion rate… what’s easier? In a lot of cases, it’s doubling your conversion rate.
Finally, something that needs to be managed on your blog is the updating of your content. The most successful blogs and mini sites always have something new for their readers all the time, and when you’re running more than one blog, this can be an ongoing challenge. The best thing you can do here is get yourself the help of some software like the above mentioned Firepow, which can help you manage a number of blog’s content from one control panel. Something like this will give you the ability to post content on schedules, get notified of when a blog needs updating, and offer you options of how to get relevant content on to your site without your effort.
Combined with all the elements we’ve talked about in previous articles, managing your blog will put the profit icing on your blogging/mini site cake. I trust that you’ve found this series informative and helpful.

Make Money at Home - Blogging For Profit Or Mini Site Part 3
The next article in this series will look at how to drive traffic to your blog or mini site - the element of online marketing that most people get stuck at.
Here we’ll look at the primary ways of driving quality traffic to your niche site. Keep in mind that the phrase QUALITY traffic is important - we only the want the visitors who might buy our products and make us money - we don’t want freebie seekers in this business model.
The first and best way to generate traffic is to do as I’ve described in the previous article, which is to produce content based on long tail keywords from your niche. After optimizing your page well for this term, and using the in built pinging fucntion to notify other websites of your new content - you can be ranking and getting traffic for uncompetitive terms within the first few days of your site’s existence.
After this, there are many ways to approach your traffic generation.
1. Article Marketing: This is essentially (though often misunderstood) the process of having articles you’ve written, published on websites other than your own, for the purpose of including a link back to your site and funneling traffic from their site to yours. You can do this with article directories or with other blogs and websites by contacting the site author. Either way, the extra exposure from these sites can drive through important relevant visitors to your pages.
2. Ongoing Keyword research and SEO: The reason I believe in having a big focus on SEO is that the people who have a specific problem and are looking for a solution, tend to gravitate toward a search engine. Yes there are millions of web viewers who don’t go near a search engine but they can be harder to target and can represent not as high a quality traffic. In other words they don’t tend to make you as much money.
Continually finding new keywords that represent relevant traffic for your products, and continually creating content to target those visitors is about as smart as you can be with ongoing traffic generation.
3. Link Building: This is both for the purpose of boosting your search engine rankings and increasing exposure to your website. You have probably heard that links back to your site from relevant websites indicate your site is more trust worthy and worthy of better SE rankings. At the same time, a link on a relevant website, whether in a piece of content on a sidebar, can increase visitors to your website. You should make it a point to continually do activities that motivate similar sites in your niche to link to you - or even if not in your niche, site’s that could send you relevant visitors.
4. Using Social Networks: Using the myriad social networks like Digg, Mysapce, Facebook, Stumbleupon etc can be another great way to increase traffic to your website. Just by submitting all the posts you make to your blog to site’s like Digg and Stumbleupon, you can earn yourself extra backlinks, and the potential to have your content seen and then shared by new members of your target audience. As is becoming clear, almost EVERYONE online hangs out at some social network for some reason, and if you can find where your target market is hanging out and leverage that, your traffic can increase exponentially.
Finally, remember that when trying to generate traffic to your blog, you should consider your niche before deciding which methods to utilize. As I’ve said before, using a social network might be great, but certain niches might be too technically un-advanced to know about social networks, and they only use Google. Some niches might be more easily approached by use of visual media like video rather than article content. The bottom line of traffic generation is where are my target market hanging out, and how can I get my site in front of them in a way that contributes value to their lives.
I hope you’ve found this traffic generation article helpful. Next we’ll look at the management of a successful blog.

Blogging For Profit Part 4
Make Money at Home - Blogging For Profit Or Mini Site Part 2
In the first article in this series we looked at the first step to creating a successful blog or mini site namely, the selection of a truly profitable niche.
Once your niche is selected, you obviously need to create a website to capitalize on it.
Blogs in particular have become such a popular choice for niche marketers because of their extreme ease of use, ease in maintaining, and ease in updating. Not to mention that the structure of a blog is generally by nature, search engine friendly. AND furthermore, where it isn’t, there is always a third party plugin to make it so.
There are many ways to create a successful blog, and the one you choose should reflect an understanding of your target market. What we’ll look at here is an example of one such method, that focuses on the generation of free traffic, and the promotion of an affiliate program for monetization.
The first thing you need to do is create a blog that’s visually or aesthetically sound. A visually sound blog, other than just looking pretty, is arranged in a way that maximizes all the content you create, by maintaining your readers attention, and drawing the most attention to your affiliate program.
There are a few ways you want to do this:
1. Choose a blog theme with a predominantly white background and with black text. Simple advice, but often ignored. Black on white is the easiest for the eyes to read. Other colour schemes can quickly tire the eyes and make it hard to maintain concentration.
2. Choose a clean and neat theme. You don’t want too much going on. It should be very clear where your content is located, very clear where your sidebar and navigation is located, where your other categories can be viewed and so forth. If a reader comes from a search engine, they should know exactly where they have to click to get the information they want. Generally I say the less options the better in terms of other features on your blog.
3. There are certain pages you absolutely want to have on your site. These are a Privacy Policy page, an About Us page, and a Contact us page. Google in particular looks at these things as indicators of a serious, quality, non spammy site. Furthermore, you want to have an archives page (easily achieved by the SRG Clean Archives plugin if you use Wordpress), so as not to have your archives taking up valuable room in your blog sidebar.
There are more factors but for the sake of this article not being 9000 words, we’ll move on.
Once you have an aesthetically pleasing blog, you need some reader pleasing content.
We’re going to assume here that you have a product selected. Of course the next step after picking your niche (sometimes these tasks are one and the same) is to select a product that you’ll promote to the niche. This is where you’ll earn your cash.
So once you’ve got a product selected, and the base of a good blog created as above, your job is to create some content that the people in your niche will find valuable and use that content to drive your website’s visitors to the merchant’s page and earn an affiliate commission.
At this point, you should have your niche’s keywords researched - by that I mean you should have some idea of what might be a good place to attack the niche from. Ideally you’d have some keyphrase related to your niche that are uncompetitive in terms of the number of pages optimized for them in the search engines.
Where you’d ideally start your content creation is by writing an article on this uncompetitive term, posting it on your site and getting it ranked in the search engines. From here, you can develop as much content on search phrases from your niche, as you desire (remember you got those phrases from a tool like the Wordtracker keyword tool) in order to increase traffic to your site.
Some factors we didn’t get to mention in this article are things like On page optimization, making your pages of content rank well in the search engines - and monetization - the art of getting the highest percentage of visitors to your site actually making you money. But for a basic overview, I think we’ve done alright.
In the next article we’ll look at driving traffic to your website.

Blogging For Profit Part 3
Blogging For Profit Part 4
Make Money at Home - Blogging For Profit Or Mini Site Part 1
This will be the first article of a 3 part series on the big question what makes a successful (as defined by profitability) blog or mini site. I believe there are 4 components and the series will contain 1 article on each of them.
Let’s get started.
The first key to the success of a blog or mini site is that it has to target a group of people (a niche) who are hungry for information of a specific nature. In other words, I’m talking about the selection of your niche.
The group of people that your blog or mini site targets has to be a group of people who have problems. Problems in the sense that they are looking for a solution to something, looking to improve something. Furthermore, in a great niche, that SOMETHING, is something that causes pain. Financial pain, physical pain, emotional pain, some sort of pain, for the simple reason that people who have pain are the people who will want to buy solutions to that pain, and hopefully from your website.
If that sounds a bit sick, trying to exploit people with pain, it’s not. It’s called marketing. You’ve had marketers doing it to you your whole life and you probably never even knew about it, why can’t you do it too? And what’s more, you’re actually going to provide these people with a real solution, so you’re being helpful!
Anyhow moving on.
So you’re looking for a group of people with a problem, but that’s not all.
Your next concern has to be whether there are enough of these people searching for solutions to their problems on the internet. How many is enough you ask? It’s a good question. With certain kinds of sites, all you need is 10 visitors to your site a day and you can turn a nice monthly profit. Other niches and products that you promote you might need thousands per day. It all depends on what you sell, and who to, AND how much commission you make when you sell to them.
The things you should do are look at the search volume, as indicated by a tool like Wordtracker. Here you’re simply looking at how many searches per day a particular keyphrase gets in the search engines. Then after that, you want to look at whether there are other sites or blogs that are competing in the same niche.
Contrary to what alot of people think, NO competition isn’t necessarily a good thing. NO competition could and often does mean that it’s not a profitable niche. What you actually want is SOME competition, but CRAPPY competition that you can DESTROY by making a better site, providing better content and in a better way.
The final piece of the puzzle of finding a good niche, is whether the niche has a quality product for you to promote. You need something to sell to these people, that is high quality, has great marketing material (sales letter etc, so it will convert your traffic well) and pays a decent commission.
This is of course assuming you’re looking at the affiliate marketing model of making money with your blog - which I suggest if you’re looking to retire from your job and earn a full time passive income, you SHOULD be. There are other ways to make money where you might think about some different factors in your niche selection.
So if you can combine all of the above factors when selecting your niche, you’ll be giving yourself and your new blog the best possible chance of success. I hope you’ve found this valuable.

Articles: the new marketing tool
You are no-body unless you have a website. Or at least it seems as though everyone has a website or at least a blog. They are being advertised through PPC, social networking sites and bloggin directories. Compared to print advertising, online methods are usually less effort and more cost effective as they can reach the exact niche market that you require. Although article writing is mostly found in magazine journalism it is becoming a must have for blogs. Articles can add frequent, relevant and interesting material to a blog ensuring it sits well with search engine placement, (providing you get the links right, but that’s a different post). There are many different ways to obtain the articles, a few ideas are mentioned here.
You can write articles yourself. Work out the relevant topics and ensure your keywords are well placed to enable good search engine listings. It should be an article that is of interest to your visitors (seems obvious doesn’t it?) and relevant. An antique dealer article on where to find an authentic Ming vase is not well placed on a blog about sharing the latest MP3 tunes. Although keywords need to be seen they shouldn’t take over the writing, leaving it in danger of being false and labelled as spam. Don’t underestimate the site visitor, and they are until they buy something. They want honest writing, not duplicates or fake information that leads them to become bored and lose interest. As well as a relevant article, the title must be catchy and relevant. Otherwise they will not even pass the title page.
The second way is to get someone else to write them such as freelance writers or article writing services. These charge by the post or per 100 words. Custom articles can range from approx .50c to $14 depending on whether it is original content or from an article bank such as EzineArticles, IdeaMarketers and ArticleBiz to name a few.
Articles work because they can be personal and addictive unlike the annoying pop-up ads of yesteryear. They can be used in different formats such as in postings or in newsletters and can be used to inform, sell or promote. Harnessing relevant keywords, businesses can benefit well from free advertising and an opportunity to generate more traffic.
Pay Per Click Marketing
Pay Per Click (PPC) is a form of advertising used by search engines and content websites such as blogs. When it started in 1998 by Jeffrey Brewer of Goto.com it was just a concept yet to proove itself. Google started search engine advertising in 1999 and in 2000 AdWords hit the web, allowing advertisers to create text ads for inclusion on the search engine. They followed with PPC as we know it today in 2002. Until then advertisements were always charged at ‘cost per thousand impressions CPM’.
It’s still an affordable method of advertising and can help customers find websites that carry the products or services they want. The Advertisers bid on keywords and can select which ones to use and their estimated budget. How much you want to spend depends on how many impressions of your ad are shown. There is a lot of secrecy around the top keywords and large companies are keen to keep these close to their chest and will pay highly for the privilege. If Google AdWords doesn’t suit your budget don’t forget Yahoo! and other engines such as Ask.
It didn’t take long for click fraud to develop, as competitors realised the potential in damaging another’s business by clicking repeatedly on their ad in the hope they would pay out unecessarily. In order to prevent invalid clicks, on their AdSense Help Center page, Google responded with,
‘Our specialists carefully monitor clicks and impressions on Google ads in order to protect your interests as well as those of our advertisers. To do this, we use both automated systems and human reviews, analyzing all ad clicks and impressions for any invalid click activity that may artificially drive up an advertiser’s costs or a publisher’s earnings.
Our system enables us to filter out most invalid clicks and impressions, and our advertisers are not charged for this activity.
In addition to our automated system, we have a team dedicated to detecting invalid activity using several specialized tools and a wide variety of techniques based on extensive experience tracking and monitoring user behavior and analyzing scenarios. We continually upgrade our detection mechanisms to proactively combat invalid activity.’
The difference with PPC as opposed to general search rankings is that it is possible to be at the top if you spend more, although it is not important as people do generally click on the majority of the ads displayed. If a keyword is not working out for you, Google doesn’t automatically pull the ad or ask you to change it so you need to keep track of progress and click through rates. If done properly, PPC can be a worthwhile advertising avenue.
SEO -Getting Back To Basics
Search engine optimization (SEO) is not only well known with webmasters but has evolved into different techniques aside from the usual keyword matching. Optimising not only covers the general website but the blog needs attention also. So, for example, having your blog optimized will improve its listings in the major search engines.
We all want more visitors and many think you can click your fingers and you magically appear at the top of the ranks. It does take time to manage the content of your site. You have to focus on one post at a time. You can’t merely increase traffic by optimizing a single page. Instead, you have to adjust the content of each post and its tags to qualify for search engines. By spending a few extra minutes on each post you can match your keywords to the content.
Ideally, search engine optimization is a collection of relevant, interesting content, simple design and user-friendly. Work out the keywords and key phrases for your site. This should be a popular phrase that many people use to describe your goods or services. There are many sites that will generate keywords and phrases based on a single word, such as Google Keyword Tool and Website Optimizer. After you identify the appropriate keywords, write your articles and posts to include them. But don’t overdo it otherwise it can be seen as spam.
Your domain name is the ideal platform for keywords. Are your keywords included in some form in your domain name? For example, www.internetebooks.com has more chance of being found on a search of ebboks than www.davesreadingstuff.com Use a select number of keywords in your titles, sub heads, and in at least once in the first and last paragraphs of the text. Highlighting your keyword text in bold is a way of bringing your keywords to the attention of search engines. Also, start using your keyword phrases in blogs, or by updating article content. You site will rank higher in the search engines if the content is unique and frequently added to or changed. Search engine optimization is a great method for driving more traffic to your site and results in improved sales to your site.
5 Ways To Make Your Blog Work For You
How do you make money from a blog? With so much choice regarding websites and hosting, the common blog is an ideal platform for showcasing your products and business. Most blogs are free to set-up, maintain and are a ready made traffic center. So how do you make money from a blog? There are many ways to do this and I have listed some here:
1. Display Affiliate Links and Banners
Make money from a blog displaying affiliate links and banners, you earn commission for referring a visitor to the affiliate’s site, your blog acts as a sales agent. The links should be relevant and placed within context otherwise people disregard it and see it as spam. Take a look at Commission Junction for ideas.
2. Sell Advertising Space
This may seem obvious but is commonly overlooked. The blog is full of opportunities to display small ads of different sizes. Providing they are relevant to your blog, you could earn a nice monthly income. AdSense, DoubleClick and BlogAds are amongst some of the more successful.
3. Sell Your Product
Direct selling of your own products such as books or videos, direct to the customer via a shopping cart or a sales page. For example Janet, the cake maker could sell her own cake recipe book and even a range of cake mixes.
It all depends on the market as to whether your product will sell, although if it does you could join an affiliate network and have others sell your product for a commission.
Companies such as Cafepress create, sell and drop-ship your products. An ideal solution for those who want to concentrate on running their business and not let their business run them.
4. Getting Paid for Writing Articles
Writing articles for your blog or for another has many benefits. There are many free article banks and article writing centers but Google now penalises duplicate content and disregards all back links on these sites meaning only the unique and relevant get through.
Each article you write and submit to the article banks though can be rewarding especially as each one has your link on it allowing thousands to access your material and link back to you.
You may still have to rewrite the content if you post it on your own blog and you should only write on relevant topics that match your content otherwise your audience will get turned off.
5. Write your blog and sell it!
Finally, once you have completed all your hard work designing and filling the blog with wonderful content. Sell it on to a large organisation.
Not just confined to social networking sites and search engines, many websites are bought out by larger companies, usually the competitors who are after a bigger market share.
This is by no means a complete list and as more ideas emerge they shall be added in. Think about how you are going to make money from your blog as it can have an impact on your writing.
Is Frequent Blog Posting Important?
Keeping people interested in your blog, whether it is a business or personal blog, is key to attracting a lot of regular visitors. Many blogs have died because people have just lost interest. The main reason for the lack of interest is simply a lack of posts by the blogger. Regular, frequent posting, which will boost your blog’s ranking in search engines, is essential to the survival of any blog.
(So, don’t be like me and take two weeks off before you make a post LOL)
You might be asking yourself, what is frequent posting? How many blog entries should I make on a given week? How do I make frequent consistently good posts? What are the reasons for me to post frequently? In this newsletter, we will go over all of the above.
What is frequent posting?
Frequent blog posting is posting enough to keep your readers interested. Obviously, people will not want to come back to a blog that hasn’t been updated in months. They want to see consistent posting so that they know coming back to check the blog next week to see if there are more posts won’t be a waste of time.
How many blog entries should I make each week?
This is one of the tougher questions to answer. It really depends on the purpose of your blog. If it’s a personal blog, a weekly or twice weekly update is an excellent idea. A political/sports/music/religion blog should have 3-4 posts per week. Business blogs should have at least 2 posts, but preferably 4 each week.
The thing to remember is that quality counts. Posting frequently just for the sake of posting frequently tends to result in subpar posts which people won’t care about. It is important to find a balance—frequent, quality posts that won’t result in burnout on your part. Why create 4 poor quality posts each week when you could post 2 quality posts per week?
How do I create quality postings on a consistent basis?
It’s all about following a consistent pattern of writing. Maybe you’re not a natural writer and this is difficult. That’s why we’ll give you an outline to help you.
1. Pick a topic that is interesting to you and to your readers. Maybe if your blog is a personal blog, you could write about the latest happenings in Hollywood.
2. Carefully think about what you’ll write about the topic. It makes it easy to make quality blog postings if you know exactly what you’ll write. Plot out everything about the post before even beginning to write it.
3. Before writing your content, pick out some keywords that are relevant to your blog. If you naturally use keywords throughout your post, you will please search engine spiders which will get your blog ranked higher on search engines. Your visitors won’t mind the use of keywords if they are used in a tasteful way.
4. Begin writing your post. Don’t limit yourself to a particular amount of words. Just do what’s natural. And if any blog post is hard for you, just take a timeout and relax. You should be able to finish the post a bit later on, after you’ve had some time to think things through, you should be able to finish the post with no problems.
Why is frequent posting important?
Blogs are meant to be outlets for individuals or businesses. They are used to get an opinion out on something and to engage readers. Readers need to have something that makes them want to keep coming back to a blog. That something is usually quality, frequent posts.
Gaining and maintaining visitors isn’t the only reason to post often in your blog. Catching the eye of a search engine—and achieving a high ranking—is another valid reason for posting frequently. Most likely, each posting in your blog features some keywords or keyword phrases scattered throughout it. Logic says that the more natural keywords you have on a blog, the better. Thus, the more posts you make on your blog, the more keywords you have on there. And the more keywords you have, the more likely a search engine bot is to crawl your site. The more your site is crawled by bots, the more likely it is that you will have a high ranking on a search engine.
Blogging 101
Blogging 101 is mostly about the blogging vocabulary. To understand blogs, you need to know the terms blog, platform, domain, and web host. Once you have mastered these key elements of blogging, you can enter any conversation about blogging with confidence. After you know what exactly a blog is, you will be on your way to passing the final exam of blogging 101.
Blog is short for weblog, which simply means a series of online posts presented in reverse chronological order. That’s all! Most blogs are text, but there are also photo blogs and video blogs. The rest of blogging 101 has to do with the technical side of things. If you are setting up a blog, you will need a platform, a web host, and a domain. A blogging platform is a computer software program that allows you to write posts and to update your blog. Your platform is also what you use to design the look of your blog, from color scheme to font size. The web host is sort of like the virtual file cabinet where your blog is stored. Your computer communicates with the host when you upload or edit a post. The domain is the online address of your blog, and usually ends in dot com’. Now that you know what a blog is, what a platform is, and what domains and hosts are, congratulate yourself! You have passed blogging 101.
